While it is never fun to see our child expressing negativity or feeling things such as anger, sadness, or disappointment, it is natural. Here are some ways to teach our children to focus on the positive in a world full of negativity:

    Reminders

Make or buy signs with affirming mantras on them such as, “You are loved” or “I am enough” to place around your home or child’s room. These constant reminders will engrain these truths into your child. If decorative signs are not your thing, consider leaving uplifting notes around the house or in their lunchboxes for a midday pick me up.

    Encouragement

Take the opportunity to build up and encourage your preschooler if they are having a hard day. Instead of focusing on what’s getting them down, remind them what they do well and the important characteristics they have, such as a warm personality or a kind heart. Likewise, try to incorporate encouragement even if your child is having a good day!

    Helping Others

Taking time to help others brings feelings of good will to everyone involved! Promote this kind of positivity by coming up with a way to serve the people around you. This can take many forms such as bringing cookies to a new neighbor or flowers to a sick friend. You could even have a family outing to serve at an animal shelter or other charitable organization. These acts of kindness teach your child selflessness and give them the satisfaction of making a difference.

    Gratitude Journal

Some days it is hard to be thankful or find joy! By keeping a gratitude journal, you will be teaching your preschooler from a young age to find positivity in every situation. Your journal can take the form of a notebook or a list on the fridge. Have your child write things they are thankful for from that day before bed. Their appreciation could be for a bike, a butterfly, or a playdate! Whatever it is, allow them to be creative and help them find joy in even the seemingly bad days.

Cultivating positive thinking in your child is important! Building this foundation will result in children who look for the good in themselves and others. That is something we need more of in this world!

Preschool is a great place for your child to make new friends! Childhood friends are important to your child’s development—socially and emotionally. They will learn how to interact with each other, learn how to understand others, and will learn to respond to others’ emotions. Here are questions to ask your child about their new friends at school:

Who did you play with today?

This is a great way to find out who your child is friends with at school. If your child only plays with one other friend at preschool, you can encourage them to play with other friends. Or, you can find out why this friend is so special to your child.

How can you be kind today?

One way to encourage kindness from your child is to ask them how they can be kind to their friends. Encourage them to take turns on the playground, or share their toys, or help others clean up. Follow up at the end of the day to find out how they were kind to their friends. This will help to encourage positive behaviors with their preschool classmates.

    How are your friends unique?

We Are All Wondersis a great book to encourage your child to see what makes their friends unique. No two people are the same, and likewise, no two preschoolers are the same. Talk to your child about what makes their new friends unique and what they like about their friends.

How did your friends feel today?

Preschool teachers often spend time helping their students to understand their feelings. Ask your child how their friends felt today. This will encourage them to think of others and how they respond to their friends’ feelings. Why was your friend sad? What happened when your friend was upset? This will help them to connect with their friends, but also help them to connect actions to feelings.

While your child may not always remember their preschool friends, they are important for your child’s development. Encourage your child’s friendships by asking about her classmates and what happened at school each day. This will let them know that their friends are important to you, too!

There are countless factors to consider when looking for the right preschool. Use our Comparison Checklist to cover all of your bases and make the right decision for you and your family!

Look no further for a few exciting ways to keep your preschooler busy while they are home for the 4th of July; try a few of these festive crafts to help your children celebrate!

    T-shirts

Start an annual tradition at home with these homemade, handprint t-shirts with your preschoolers. When they’ve grown, you’ll have a drawer-full of memories from this festive holiday! Handprint shirts are simple even for your youngest toddlers to do. You’ll need white t-shirts and red and blue acrylic paint from your craft store for this easy-to-do activity. Feeling ambitious? Try these red, white, and blue tie-dye shirts with your preschoolers.

    Firework prints

With a handful of plastic, bendy straws, sponge, dish scrubber from your sink, or your preschooler’s hands, dip your “firework” in paint and print your fireworks on a piece of white cardstock. Splash a few fireworks on each page! Once the paint has dried, outline prints with glue and sprinkle on some red, white, and blue glitter.

    Seeing stars

Using contact paper, cut out stars and cover in squares of red, white, and blue tissue paper for a simple sun-catcher to hang in your window! With paper plates, cut out a circle from the inside of the plate. Cover the outside of the plate in red, white, and blue paper stars to make a wreath! Let your preschoolers practice their fine-motor skills by cutting on the lines of the paper plates and cutting out the stars!

    Paper lanterns

Follow these easy-to-follow instructions to make paper lanterns with your preschooler. Make these ahead of time and you will also have the perfect décor for your party!

There are so many ways to celebrate 4th of July! Make sure to get your preschooler involved in the fun and traditions by making a craft this summer.

School's out! But that doesn’t mean your preschooler's education stops! Summer is the perfect time to expand your home library, or even visit your local library! Make a visit to your local library part of your weekly schedule, and help your child work their way up to 1000 books before kindergarten. Checking out books at your library can help you rotate the books this summer, and then you can buy your preschooler's favorites.

Here are some books to look for, at the library and online!

    Look for books that…

    Build good character:

We’re All Wonders is inspired by the bestseller Wonder, now a major motion picture. There is now a nationwide movement to Choose Kind. "Parents and educators can introduce the importance of choosing kind to younger readers with this gorgeous picture book, featuring Auggie and Daisy on an original adventure, written and illustrated by R. J. Palacio."

In Be Kind, your young preschooler will learn how to help others feel better, stand up to bullies, and help make the world a better place. They will learn how to be a good friend and recognize the need for kindness.

    Expand their world:

Help your child discover the world around them with Around the World, a Follow the Trail Book. Help the animals find their home by tracing the trail. Your child will find their inner-explorer with The Little Explorer: A Pioneer Primer. Your preschooler will "learn all about the most influential explorers who searched the world far and wide in this engaging and colorful board book perfect for pioneers-in-training!"

    Will help them fall asleep:

If you’re looking for new bedtime stories, these are great to keep on their nightstand. Don’t Blink is a fun, interactive book for your procrastinating preschooler. "Here's how it works: if you can avoid getting to the end of this book, you can avoid bedtime, simple as that. (It's a pretty sweet deal, actually.) But each time you blink, you have to turn a page. Those are just the rules. So whatever you do, DON'T BLINK!"

Bedtime for Mommywill turn the tables on your preschooler. Let them read (and practice!) how to put their own parents to bed for a change! Bedtime for Mommy is "a hilarious reversal of the classic bedtime routine in which a little girl puts Mommy (and then Daddy) to bed."

    Teach new habits:

Good Night Octopus and How to be a Big Kid help your preschooler learn to do daily activities on their own. Use this summer to instill these new habits in your child's routine!

Make sure that your child makes time for reading every day and keep it a part of their daily schedule at home! These books will help keep your child engaged in learning, even throughout the summer.

With a preschooler home for summer break, parents can often slip into the habit of buying chocolate snack boxes for their children and calling it a day. However, with just a little thought and panache, you can prepare some sweet summer treats that don’t come in plastic wrap.

    Ice Cream Bread

This item is first on the list because it’s not only super fun and super easy, but it’s also surprisingly original. All you need is 1 pint of your favorite ice cream (go basic with vanilla, chocolate or strawberry, or get adventurous with peanut butter cup, cookies and cream or rocky road) and 1.5 cups of self-rising flour. Stir the ice cream and flour together until the flour is moistened, then spoon the batter into a small, greased and floured loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 40-45 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted into the bread comes out clean. The ice cream “bread” sometimes has more of the consistency of cake, depending on the type of ice cream you use, but who’s complaining about that?

    Fruit and Yogurt Parfait

Plain yogurt’s more outrageous and funky cousin is the parfait. Layer a small bowl with vanilla yogurt, chopped fruit or banana slices, a few berries and a sprinkling of granola on top. It tastes sweet, but comes packed with fiber and nutrients!

    Fruit, Cheese and Chocolate Kabobs

Lance some chopped fresh fruit or banana slices on a stick with your preschooler’s favorite cubed cheese. If that recipe isn’t enticing enough for the youngsters, drizzle the kabobs in chocolate syrup and freeze for a sweet treat they can’t ignore.

    Brownie Cones

For a new take on two classic sweets, all you need is a package of brownie mix, one-half cup of vegetable oil, one-fourth cup of water, 2 eggs and 12 flat-bottomed wafer ice cream cones. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, then stir the brownie mix, water, eggs and vegetable oil into a bowl. Spoon the brownie batter into ice cream cones, filling them about 3/4 full. Bake on an ungreased baking sheet for about 20 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted into the brownie comes out clean. Top with icing or any other fun goodies!

It is truly amazing how a child can find the fun in anything from a garden hose, a fallen stick from a tree, or an oddly shaped roof tile. This is one of the unique abilities that each child possesses, and is precisely what you can utilize to promote healthy childcare fun. Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Oviedo, Florida shares insight on healthy and beneficial toys and activities that you and your child can enjoy after preschool.

Anything can be a toy or game

Although there are a variety of toys and games that you can buy for your child, sometimes the best games can be found right around you. Take your child into the garden, to the park, or to the beach and ask him or her to find toys or activities in their surroundings. These may not look like toys, but after a brief explanation you will quickly understand how some atypical objects can be made into fun toys. This activity also promotes learning through imaginative conceptual construction.

    Supervision is essential

The only requirement is that your child is well supervised. This is for the safety aspect, as the outdoors can be dangerous at times to an unwatched child. You can help encourage healthy activities that promote good exercise, as well as learning while he or she is having fun. This is one of the fundamentals that we instruct teachers at our preschool, and it has produced very positive results in our students.

When it comes to learning, fun, and everything regarding the healthy development of a growing child, Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Oviedo, Florida, strives to offer the best. Your infant is born with their brain being partially developed. The next few years after birth are critical for continued healthy development of the brain, including the acquisition of language skills. Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Oviedo discusses how you can promote language skills, while supporting brain development, in a child as young as a newborn.

    Making sounds

Prior to and after birth, the best way to foster the acquisition of language skills in your child is to talk. When you talk to your infant, in utero or after birth, your child will internalize the sound of your voice and the sounds of the language. When your infant begins to make sounds, it will come from hearing those that are in the surrounding environment. Children learn language by imitation. Your infant will try to copy sounds and you will hear babbling, blowing, and other such intonations as your baby begins to learn to speak.

Your child understands intonation before words

Your child is born with an innate ability to understand intonation. This means that your child will be able to understand language before he or she can speak. Encourage your infant to make as many sounds as possible to reinforce what your child is trying to do. You should also continue to talk to your infant, always in a calm or happy tone of voice, to provide the ongoing exposure to language that your child needs. Reading to your infant is another great way to promote language acquisition.

During the last thirty years we have come to understand the fine intricacies of how each child gains a unique perspective about the world. Until recently, an all-round day care education was offered with the hope that each child would discover a unique niche in the world. Currently, we have the knowledge and ability to quickly identify and promote particular interest areas in each child, where they are more likely to excel. We will discuss how you can assist in discovering your child’s unique strengths and cognitive capabilities, and promote them in everyday life.

    The start of cognitive development

In utero your child is undergoing heavy cognitive development. Your child’s brain must learn many functions that happen for adults automatically. Once an infant is born, he or she must begin learning how to thrive in the world. You will have a great opportunity to assist your child in this learning process. Your parental role will influence your child during these early child care years, and aid in this early cognitive development.

Cognitive development is a continual practice

You are ensuring that your child continues to learn, practice and master cognitive skills while at home. When attending day care or preschool, a teacher will be furthering this development. Parents should research some fun activities and games that you and your child can play together, which will serve as preparation for the challenges of preschool.

Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Oviedo, Florida provides special child care services to maximize the potential of your growing infant. We provide each unique child with the individual attention necessary to facilitate adaptable learning styles and educational activities, tailored to meet each child’s particular needs. We offer our exclusive Brain WavesTM Curriculum that maximizes each child’s learning potential and provide an exceptional educational experience. Getting creative with your child can be great fun for both parent and child. Not only is it fun, but art is an essential part of every child’s development. These activities aid not only in cognitive development, but also in the development of fine motor skills. These activities are also important for developing imagination and creativity. Here are a few art activities recommended by child care experts.

    Potato stamps

Potato stamps are a good way for your child to express creativity. Simply cut out a few interesting shapes from small raw potatoes, and have your child dip them in a bit of safe finger paint and apply the painted shapes to paper.

    Chalk drawing

Using some colored chalk, take your child outside to draw on the driveway or the sidewalk. Chalk is easy to remove from any surface, is inexpensive and is engaging for young children. Your child can create unique pictures, and afterwards you can simply wash them away with a splash of water.

    Crayons

Non-toxic crayons are probably the first thing that most parents give to young children. Show your child how to work with crayons and blank paper, but be sure to supervise, especially with very young children who might want to put them in their mouths. Once your child begins to learn how to color, you can offer some coloring books for more learning and fun.

There are many aspects that are essential to your child’s early development and prenatal brain development is where it all starts. Here are some interesting facts about this stage of life:

    • Early formation: The human brain begins to form early, when the first brain cells are born just two days after conception.
    • At birth, the majority of your child’s brain cells are not connected:

When your child is born the brain has almost 100 billion neurons, almost the same number of neurons as a mature brain. These neurons are not connected but with the right stimulation they will build strong connections between brain cells. These connections are the key to maximizing your child’s brain development for future academic success.

To give your child the best support during this time, nutrition, physical health and low stress levels all play important roles. Ask your physician for a healthy meal plan with a focus on brain boosting foods and for a light exercise plan to help you stay active. Take time to relax to reduce stress and enjoy this exciting journey.

Supporting early brain development after birth

At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Oviedo, we have an exclusive Brain Waves™ Curriculum that supports neural pathway development to allow for language, cognitive, social-emotional and physical development for your child.

Our unique Brain Waves™ Curriculum provides your child the opportunity to expand his or her learning ability, maximizing their optimal mental capacity. Each child is unique in the way he or she learns, therefore our program adapts to your child’s learning style and pace. Our classrooms have different learning stations that stimulate and engage your child. Your child will be able to explore in a safe environment and learn while having fun.

Developing problem solving skills is considered one of the best ways to support brain development. Our teachers provide activities that challenge your child to develop problem solving skills and encourage him or her to think at a higher level, thereby stimulating brain development.

brain waves oviedo flIt is common knowledge that too much TV can have a negative impact on children. But just how does watching TV affect a child's brain? The latest research from Japan's Division of Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience at Tohoku University suggests that too much TV can actually damage the brain's growth and structure.

According to this research, the front section of the brain showed an increase in grey matter in children between five and 18 years old who watched 0-4 hours of TV daily. This additional grey matter develops in the frontal polar cortex of the brain's frontal lobe and, although it sounds like a positive change, it is actually associated with reduced language, vision, and memory development, reduced cognitive development, shorter attention spans, and even aggression.

Fortunately, there are many other activities that you can do with your child right here in Oviedo, Florida. For example, you could visit The Oviedo Aquatic Facility for swimming fun or one of our local parks, many of which have playgrounds.

So how much is too much TV and how often should children be allowed to watch TV?

Experts at the BabyCenter Medical Advisory Board believe that between one and two hours of TV is more than enough for toddlers, while children younger than two years old should not be exposed to TV at all. It is also better to choose a specific TV program instead of allowing your child to watch indiscriminately. Make sure the program is child-friendly, educational, and encourages interaction. It is also a good idea to pre-record shows that you know are of good quality and watch them with your child at a set time of day. You can make this an active rather than a passive experience by asking them questions about the characters and the events on the screen.
